The post yesterday was, get out and exercise. The post today is get out and exercise your right to vote. The mid-term elections (2010) are just around the corner. My ballet was filled out and dropped off two days ago.
Who and what should you vote for?
I'm not about to open that can of worms. First of all, there are only a few people that are visiting this blog and it could be 2012 before this post gets any visibility. Second, you should do your own research and vote the way you believe is best. I'm not one to play "Letter" or "Party" search when I vote. No candidate is all bad and none are all good (despite what the ads say). It's the same with initiatives, you have to see if they follow along your way of thinking or not.
You will find a common theme if you read a few of my posts. I was a heavy user of health care which has led me to became a heavy believer in health care. The quality of health care available these days is amazing and why I am still around to sit here and bang on a keyboard. This might not be the case if my crash happened 10 years earlier. Medical advancements are being made in leaps and bounds.
One theme I haven't been as obvious about is that I believe everyone should have access to the same health care I received. I believe everyone would feel the same way if they or a loved one went through what I did.
Could you deign someone treatment if you came across someone bloody and broken?
It is easy to take the opinion that only those who pay for insurance or can afford care be granted access to health care. The reality is that there are very few of us that would turn their back on someone in their time of need. The problem is around how we are going to pay for it. No one would be opposed to single-payer if it came at no cost to anyone. A plan like single-payer would come at a high cost if just the working class continue funding the majority of services that all income levels utilize. The money is there but the willingness for everyone to pitch in isn't.
Single-payer isn't on any ballots this election but how you feel about health care reform is. Your vote will let Washington DC know if you are behind it or not by who you cast your vote for.
Are you for repealing health care reform?
If you answer "Yes" to the question above, I sincerely hope you never lose your insurance and have a major health issue. You will lose everything you have if this happens to you. If you are young, you will spend the rest of your life paying medical bills or end up filing for bankruptcy.
A friend of mine doesn't have medical insurance and doesn't think that it is necessary. He has some coverage through worker's compensation and if he has an accident in his car. He isn't covered if he crashes his bicycle and suffers serious injuries. I keep reminding him that you can go from $0.00 to $225,000.00 in just a few hours. He'll become the million dollar man after just a few days and few operations.
It's time for me to get off the health care soap box and back to my original thought behind this post. Please be sure to vote. Please remember that voting IS NOT like picking a team to win. I have heard people state they are voting for someone or something just because they think it will be the "winner". It's my preference to know what you stand for or believe in. It would be easier to come up with something we all can agree on if we know that we are close to agreement. This could just be wishful thinking on my part. That we can get back to being respectful and gracious with one another.
Five days left to get your vote in. We are 100% mail-in where I live so I was able to get my ballot filled out and delivered before all the crazy ads drove my nuts or to resolve that voting is a waste of my time. The ads that keep running on TV and the radio make me think that my vote should have been for "none of the above"! This is a cynical outlook but I find it would be the only logical response if we believed all the ads.
Five days left, do your research, do you homework, get your vote in on time or get to the voting station on time if that's what you need to do.
I still like to believe that no one would go through all the pains of an election just to try to do harm our country. Having said that, there is a lot of crazy theories going around. The stuff that comes to me through email would be much funnier if the person that forwards them didn't actually believe what they say. It's like everyone works for the National Inquirer now... check that, the stuff from the National Inquirer is much more credible these days than what comes across as email. I'll keep my eyes open for politicians that are actually aliens out to turn us all into snack food or worse yet, make us watch reality TV shows. On second thought, it might be better to end up as a snack than sit through hours of staged and rehearsed "Reality shows".
OK, that's it really. Time to get off the soap box and do something that has real meaning and is productive to society. I only hope that I set the DVD-R correctly to record all my favorite news shoes. I need to see who has been voted off the island or sent home to diet on their own. Hey, a little reality TV can be a good thing!
