Having a thing is the modern version of "Pursuit of Happiness". Most of us have our interests and passions. Some of us are lucky enough that our work involves or is centered on our passion.
This country is great in that you can pursue you dreams as long as they are not illegal or harmful to others. We don't have this perfected and seem to be going backwards at times. Here's an example: It is legal for me to buy, possess, and consume alcohol (as long as I'm not driving) in my pursuit of happiness. It is illegal for me to buy, possess, and consume pot in my pursuit of happiness. My experience as a bartender was that those smoking pot were much friendlier, did not start fights, and helped the food sales.
Why do we spend more on the control of pot than we do in the control of alcohol by minor or drunk drivers?
For clarification, I lump beer, wine, and all spirits into my definition of "alcohol". For further clarification, I'm not on the stump to push for getting pot legalized. I vote for it because I don't like the double standard. My view is that as long as you are responsible with what you do, go for it. Seriously, if you like owning and shooting automatic weapons, got for it. I target practice in a safe and sane manner and no on gets hurt.
The thing about us having a thing is that we are all different. I wouldn't like it if folks got together to ban things I enjoy. For example, if all of a sudden a belief that electric guitars are bad for the nation, I'd have to break the law and keep jamming any way.
Well, it's time to head to church for a little acoustic guitar playing (these will never be illegal unless they are only used to write protest songs). Speaking of the "duality of mankind", I'll be listening to some Classic Rock on the way to the church. I don't think rock and roll is corrupting and agree with Mavis Staples that the devil doesn't have ANY music.
It is funny to think that "the government" used to be uptight over Bob Dylan and the other protest singers. Those folks had no idea of what would come out later to sell some tunes.
