Eating Healthy

I did mention in previous posts on this blog that I quit smoking the day of my motorcycle crash. Quitting smoking has been a goal for a long time and I have not smoked since April 18, 2008. I don't recommend five days in a coma as the best way to quit smoking. It worked for me but there is no guarantee it will work again.

The amount of money I spent on cigarettes each day sure buys a lot of food at the grocery store. I used to go to fast food places for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday. It wasn't until I started shopping after my accident at the grocery store that I realized you can get a lot of food for four or five dollars a day. I'm glad I discovered this after I lost most my weight. The realization of how much food you can buy at a grocery store at a reasonable price came to me after I developed better eating habits. This is good because I really do like food and might have developed bad eating habits if I had started buying in large quantities before I learned how to eat healthy. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy the fast food places, restaurants, and occasional bag of pretzels. I just enjoy these in moderation now.

The fast food restaurants make eating convenient but they are not that much of a bargain compared to the cost of buying bulk foods. I might have the definition of bulk foods incorrect. What I'm trying to say is buying a large container of oat meal provides a lot more meals than buying one meal for four or five dollars. There are a lot of foods that are cheaper but not as healthy as spending a few more dollars for fresh vegetables and fresh fruits. Preserved and bagged foods are easier to have around because you do not have to worry about them spoiling but they do not provide as much nutrition.

This is something that occurred to me today after taking inventory of my food stores I keep it work. I spend less on food during the week than I used to to get one or two prepared meals a day. The good thing is I am getting less fat from a whole week's worth of food than I did in a value meal or two. Take a little time to plan and shop for your meals during the week then you can stray a little bit on the weekends. Of course this assumes that you are working and not retired, laid-off, or between jobs. It doesn't hurt to continue concentrating on eating healthy Monday through Friday and treating yourself on the weekend.

That's about all I have to add for tonight.
